Mercedes-Benz in North America

Mercedes-Benz in North America.

Mercedes-Benz has had a presence in the U.S. almost as long as it has been in existence – only two years after Carl Benz invented the automobile in 1886, his contemporary Gottlieb Daimler founded the Daimler Motor Company (DMC) together with piano manufacturer William Steinway in Queens, New York. We are the first foreign automaker to set up shop in the United States.

A journey full of pioneering spirit.

The history of Mercedes-Benz in North America is a journey full of pioneering spirit. Today, North America is a crucial market and a center for innovation and production for Mercedes-Benz.

Across North America, Mercedes-Benz supports more than 10,000 jobs directly, 7,500 of which are in assembly. This safeguards an estimated 107,000 additional jobs across U.S. business suppliers and service providers. The 386 authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships across the U.S. alone employ another 27,000 people, which additionally secure an estimated 50,000 jobs¹.

With retail sales of 303,200 passenger cars and 40,000 vans in 2025, the U.S. market plays a crucial role in the Mercedes-Benz success story. On average, we’ve invested more than USD 1 billion annually over the last ten years in our U.S. operations (in production, infrastructure, Research & Development, design and the dealer network). We plan to invest more than USD 7 billion into our US operations until 2030, according to our business plan, demonstrating the commitment of Mercedes-Benz to its local footprint and continued growth in the U.S. and North America.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the biggest exporters of vehicles out of the United States. Roughly 60% of all SUVs assembled at our Tuscaloosa, AL manufacturing site go – to almost every country in the world, contributing to the U.S. trade balance and export power.

With the exception of Germany, Mercedes-Benz buys more in the US than in any other country in the world. Example: More than 96% of the aluminium and more than 98% of the steel used for the cars we assemble in Alabama is sourced from vendors in the U.S.

Having become an integral part of American car culture, Mercedes-Benz is counting on the next 138 years to be as memorable as the first.
