Sustainable Development Goals.

July 04, 2025 – Sustainability holds a high priority for the Mercedes-Benz Group. Therefore, as a member of the UN Global Compact, we also support the United Nations' vision for a more sustainable future. A central component of this initiative for sustainable and responsible corporate governance is the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a company, we are convinced that we can contribute to achieving these goals. The sustainable business strategy of the Mercedes-Benz Group is built on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We particularly focus on those SDGs where we can exert influence and create added value. Our Six Strategic Areas regarding Sustainability underscore our commitment to making a positive impact on society and the economy.

In addition to our commitment through various Mercedes-Benz Corporate Citizenship initiatives, our work regarding sustainability focuses on the following SDGs:

As Mercedes-Benz, we are aware of our social responsibility. We aim to make a noticeable, positive contribution that goes beyond our core business activities – and this on a global scale. Therefore, as part of our Corporate Citizenship Engagement, we support numerous initiatives worldwide that aim to contribute to environmental protection or significantly and sustainably improve people's lives. Through donations of goods and money, sponsorships, and partnerships in the field of Corporate Citizenship, as well as actions for employees, we strive to make a measurable, positive impact with two overarching goals: contributing to ecological sustainability and strengthening communities.

Mercedes-Benz is committed to creating a work environment where all employees, regardless of their gender, can develop their talents. This commitment to gender equality is outlined in our Integrity Code and the Principles of Social Responsibility and Human Rights of the Mercedes-Benz Group. SDG 5 is especially reflected in the sustainability focus themes People and Human Rights.

  • We implement policies and practices aimed at eliminating discrimination and promoting equality for all employees, regardless of gender. With our commitment to creating an inclusive workplace, we strive to ensure that all employees have the opportunity to thrive (SDG 5.1).
  • Mercedes-Benz offers women equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes and aims to fill more leadership positions at all levels of the organization with women. (SDG 5.5).

Through our efforts in the six strategic focus areas of sustainability, Mercedes-Benz is driving progress towards achieving SDG 8. These efforts aim to promote economic growth and increase productivity.

  • We focus on advancements and innovation in sectors such as electromobility, automated driving, and manufacturing techniques. These efforts aim to drive economic growth and enhance productivity (SDG 8.2)
  • We are firmly committed to promoting sustainable consumption practices. Through initiatives like recycling, the use of renewable energy, and the development of low-CO₂ vehicles, we strive to improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact (SDG 8.4).
  • Mercedes-Benz strives to provide full and productive employment opportunities for its employees, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, age, or disability. Worldwide, we compensate work performed in all societies according to the same principles and are committed to creating an inclusive work environment (SDG 8.5).
  • It is the aim of our Human Rights Respect System (HRRS), to identify risks and potential negative impacts of our business activities on the respect for human rights at an early stage and to systematically prevent them (SDG 8.7).

Our Sustainable Business Strategy emphasizes our commitment to having a positive impact on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. With these efforts, Mercedes-Benz is driving progress towards achieving SDG 9, and promoting sustainable industrial development. Through digitization and electrification, Mercedes-Benz is shaping a more sustainable mobility and enhancing Traffic Safety.

  • Mercedes-Benz is committed to developing high-quality, reliable, and more sustainable infrastructure. We invest in advanced manufacturing facilities and logistics networks that support economic development and ensure resilient and accessible infrastructure for all customers. An example of this commitment is the Mercedes me Charge (SDG 9.1).
  • Trust is an essential part of human well-being and promotes economic development, as only trustworthy digital infrastructure and technology receive customer acceptance. Our ambition is to build and maintain Digital Trust among our stakeholders in the way we handle digital technologies and innovation, e.g. Artificial Intelligence (SDG 9.1).
  • Mercedes-Benz strengthens scientific research and technological capabilities through significant investments in Research & Development (SDG 9.5).

Mercedes-Benz is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all employees are supported – regardless of gender, age ethnic origin and nationality, physical and mental abilities, religions, beliefs, sexual orientations, and social backgrounds.

This commitment to reducing inequalities is also described in Our Integrity Code and the Principles of Social Responsibility and Human Rights. By adhering to these principles, Mercedes-Benz drives progress towards achieving SDG 10 and is dedicated to a fair and inclusive environment for our employees. SDG 10 is especially reflected in the sustainability focus themes People and Human Rights.

  • Mercedes-Benz is committed to promoting an inclusive environment that fosters the social and economic inclusion of all employees. We implement policies and initiatives to ensure that employees, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to the organization and thus to society (SDG 10.2).
  • We actively work to ensure equal opportunities for all employees by implementing principles in our policies to eliminate discriminatory practices (SDG 10.3).

Our focus on Decarbonisation and Resources & Circularity as well as Traffic Safety stresses our commitment to creating a positive impact on urban environments. Through these efforts, Mercedes-Benz drives progress towards achieving SDG 11:

  • We focus on enhancing road safety through advanced vehicle technologies. Mercedes-Benz contributes to more sustainable mobility in urban centers through its vehicles anddata-based solutions for greater traffic safety and improved traffic flow (SDG 11.2).
  • Mercedes-Benz is committed to reducing the environmental impact of urban areas by investing in in technologies that improve air quality, such as electric vehicles, and support efficient waste management practices to minimize the ecological footprint (SDG 11.6).

Our environmental focus theme on Resources & Circularity highlights our commitment to creating a positive impact on more sustainable consumption and production. Through these efforts, Mercedes-Benz continues to drive progress towards achieving SDG 12.

  • Mercedes-Benz focuses on reducing its environmental footprint through efficient resource utilization (e.g. water, energy). We are committed to increasing the efficiency of our vehicles and significantly reducing the use of raw materials, particularly by reinforcing closed material loops for the primary raw materials needed for electric vehicles. This approach sets the course for more sustainable production (SDG 12.2).
  • We ensure that all materials are handled responsibly throughout their lifecycle, significantly reducing harmful emissions (SDG 12.4).
  • Mercedes-Benz is dedicated to reducing waste generation by implementing comprehensive strategies for waste prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse (SDG 12.5).

In our Ambition 2039, we set ourselves the target of making our fleet of new vehicles net carbon neutral[1]Net carbon-neutral means that carbon emissions that are not avoided or reduced at Mercedes-Benz are compensated for by certified offsetting projects.

This underscores our dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility, reinforcing our commitment to climate action and supporting SDG 13. In our Sustainable Business Strategy, the focus on Decarbonisation drives progress towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

  • Mercedes-Benz aligns its goals with national and international climate policies and contributes to global efforts to mitigate climate change through more sustainable practices and innovative technologies. Our commitment to the Paris Agreement demonstrates our endeavor to reduce our carbon footprint (SDG 13.2).
