Norbert Piltz, German Red Cross

Indispensable helper in emergencies.

Norbert Piltz has been volunteering with the German Red Cross for the past 20 years. Helping people through difficult situations with real support is important to him.

As a paramedic, he provides medical standby services in order to ensure that assistance is available on site during sporting events, concerts and city festivals. In addition, as a leader of a civil protection unit, Norbert Piltz is involved in the training of emergency response staff and is responsible for coordinating operations. Volunteer units such as these are an indispensable part of Germany’s civil protection system.

Norbert Piltz and his team were among those deployed during the devastating floods in the Ahr Valley, providing assistance when it was needed most. When he is called in the case of a disaster, he has to coordinate the response, take decisions, assign personnel and work in close coordination with the authorities.

What I value very much about my volunteer work is the strong sense of solidarity, the trust within the community and the shared commitment to helping people in need quickly and effectively – always where help is needed most.
