Supply with green energy
Mercedes-Benz has concluded a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Iberdrola – one of the global market leaders in the renewable energy sector – for the supply of electricity from the Windanker wind farm in the Baltic Sea.
This contract alone, allows Mercedes-Benz to secure more than 140MW of renewable electricity from 2027 onwards, covering around 30% of the company’s electricity needs in Germany. With this project, Mercedes-Benz is expanding its green electricity portfolio and at the same time actively supporting the expansion of new offshore wind energy capacities in Germany.
The supply of green energy is a major lever toward reducing CO₂ emissions in our global production network at Mercedes-Benz and thus for our company as a whole. Partnering with Iberdrola we are taking an important step to further secure our future renewable energy capacities. With this, we underline our comprehensive commitment to sustainability and at the same time our intention to play an active part in the energy transition.
Jörg Burzer
Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management
The electricity supply agreement marks one of the largest announced long-term corporate power purchase agreements in the automotive sector.
The agreement with Mercedes-Benz Group AG is an important step that allows Iberdrola Deutschland to expand partnerships with industrial and commercial customers that are willing to reduce their carbon footprint and transition towards a green economy. It is through cooperations like these that we can develop large-scale renewable energy projects successfully and on market-based mechanisms.
Felipe Montero
CEO of Iberdrola Germany
With this agreement, Mercedes-Benz is taking another important step as part of its sustainable business strategy. The company's goal is to supply its own production facilities worldwide with renewable energy by 2039. Together with the plans already announced to implement a wind farm on its testing grounds in northern Germany in Papenburg through a long-term power purchase agreement with partner UKA Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen GmbH & Co. KG and the expansion of photovoltaic systems at its own locations, Mercedes-Benz will cover about half of its future electricity demand in Germany.
