MBE Factory 56

How Factory 56 redefines sustainability and efficiency

The future of production.

In 2020, Factory 56 was built at the Sindelfingen site, setting new standards in sustainability and efficiency. The plant is carbon-neutral on a balance sheet basis. A photovoltaic system on the roof supplies the hall with renewable energy, supported by a stationary energy storage system based on vehicle batteries. With a total capacity of 1,400 kWh, this storage system temporarily stores surplus solar energy generated by the photovoltaic system.

As a pilot system used for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz plant, an innovative direct current network is installed in Factory 56 which feeds the power directly into the plant's DC network without power inverters or losses. A stationary energy bank based on vehicle batteries is connected to the DC network and has a capacity of 1400 kWh. This is also able to store solar power and deliver it on days with little sunshine. In addition the shop is supplied with external power from renewable energy sources.

A holistic approach to sustainable production

Just as digitalisation plays a crucial role, sustainability is also comprehensively integrated and implemented in Factory 56. This includes not only environmentally and resource-friendly production but also a strong social and corporate responsibility, all while ensuring economic viability. As a result, Factory 56 makes a significant contribution to the corporate sustainability goals.

Conserving resources and reducing energy consumption are the key pillars of this approach. Factory 56 is carbon neutral. Its energy requirements have been reduced by 25% compared to other assembly halls.

The photovoltaic system on the roof of Factory 56 generates green electricity, covering around 30 % of the facility’s annual energy demand. Part of this electricity is fed into an innovative direct current (DC) grid that improves the energy efficiency of the hall during operation. This system powers technical building equipment, such as ventilation systems.

In addition, a stationary energy storage system based on vehicle batteries is connected to the DC grid. With a total capacity of 1,400 kWh, it stores surplus solar power from the photovoltaic system, ensuring an efficient and sustainable energy supply for the factory.
