Gottlieb Daimler was born on 17 March 1834 above a bakery and wine bar in Höllgasse in Schorndorf. He lived there with his parents Johannes and Wilhelmine Friederike Däumler and his four brothers and sisters until 1853.
After completing school and an apprenticeship, Gottlieb Daimler left Schorndorf, began his professional career at an engineering works in the Alsace region, and later studied in Stuttgart.
The house in which Gottlieb Daimler was born was bought in 1979 by Daimler-Benz AG and restored almost to its original state with great effort. With the exception of minor alterations at the rear of the house, the present room layout is exactly as it was in Daimler’s day. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Gottlieb Daimler on 6 March 2000 the exhibition on the ground floor was renewed. Today it includes an impressive collection of exhibits, models and documents dealing with the life and work of the automotive pioneer.
