CEO 1995-2006
Jürgen Schrempp completes a motor mechanic apprenticeship at Daimler-Benz, and then studies engineering in Offenburg, returning to Daimler-Benz AG in 1967.
After various posts at group headquarters, he handles executive duties at the subsidiary Mercedes-Benz of South Africa from 1974 to 1980. There, he is appointed to the Board of Management, where he is responsible for the technical development. From 1982 to 1984, he successfully revitalises the US commercial vehicle subsidiary Euclid Trucks, and afterwards returns to South Africa. There, he takes over the chairmanship of the Board of Management in 1985. Two years later, he is appointed to the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG as deputy member; from 1989 to 1995, he is a full member and Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG. In 1995, Jürgen Schrempp succeeds Edzard Reuter as Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG. Schrempp again makes the automotive business the focus of the company. The merger with Chrysler to form DaimlerChrysler AG takes place under his direction in 1998. On 28 July 2005, Jürgen Schrempp unexpectedly announces his decision to step down. His successor will be Dieter Zetsche.
