Walter Hitzinger starts his career in 1935 at Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in Austria and takes over the General Directorate and Chair of the Board of Management of the Austrian truck manufacturer Saurer-Werke AG in Vienna in after a stint at the aero-engine factory Flugmotorenwerke Ostmark in 1945.

After the Second World War, he initially sets up a factory for electrical machinery and in 1952 moves on to Vereinigte Österreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke AG (VÖEST), Linz. At the beginning of 1961, Walter Hitzinger is appointed by the Supervisory Board of Daimler-Ben AG to the Board of Management, where he acts as General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Management until his retirement in February 1966.
