Sebastian Fay was born on July 10, 1984 in Bad Soden am Taunus. After graduating from high school, he studied law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 2004 to 2010, specializing in Law & Finance. Following his studies, he completed his legal traineeship at the Wiesbaden Regional Court with a focus on employment law.

Sebastian Fay began his trade union career with a one-year trainee course at IG Metall and then became a trade union secretary at the Heilbronn-Neckarsulm branch of IG Metall. In 2016, he moved to the IG Metall district management in Baden-Württemberg, where he was responsible for collective bargaining policy in the metal and electrical industry until 2021. From February 2021 to December 2023, he then worked at IG Metall Mitte district management, where he also took over responsibility for the steel industry in addition to the metal and electrical industry.

Since January 2024, Sebastian Fay has been Head of Collective Bargaining Policy and Crafts at the IG Metall Executive Board.
