Promotion of research projects and academic dialogue

Daimler and Benz Foundation.

The Daimler and Benz Foundation promotes interdisciplinary research and academic dialogue. As laid down in its Statutes, the purpose of the Foundation is to gain a better understanding of the interrelations between humans, the environment, and technology.

By making scientific findings available, the Foundation seeks to make a contribution to future social developments. Within interdisciplinary research alliances, scientists are given the opportunity to work on topics over an extended period. One such research alliance is currently investigating conflicts of interest in the future distribution of water in Germany – in view of climate change and future weather extremes, we are not immune to water shortages even in this country.

Each year, the Daimler and Benz Foundation awards scholarships to selected postdocs and junior professors in a leadership role. The aim is to strengthen the autonomy and creativity of the up-and-coming generation of academics and to pave the way for the careers of these committed researchers during the productive phase following their doctorate. With the “Bertha Benz Prize”, the Foundation honors young female engineers for their outstanding dissertations. This prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, is awarded annually in commemoration of the pioneering spirit, courage, and visionary character of Bertha Benz. It is presented on the occasion of the “Bertha Benz Lecture”, in which female scientists and experts from various disciplines and sectors speak on topics of social relevance.

The Foundation also endeavors to increase the visibility and acceptance of science among the general public. For this purpose, for example, it invites renowned academics several times a year to talk about the current state of their research projects in the “Dialog in the Museum” lecture series in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, followed by discussion with the participants. The lectures focus on current topics, and in particular their economic and social implications.
