The Mercedes-Benz internal re-training program "D.Shift" for employees from production into digital professions.

Mercedes-Benz internal retraining programme

With D.SHIFT in digital professions.

With digitalisation and the increasing use of powerful AI systems, all job profiles at Mercedes-Benz are changing. That is why, as part of our training initiative Turn2Learn, we are focusing specifically on digitalisation and AI topics.

In 2023, there were around 140,000 participants worldwide in training on topics such as data, artificial intelligence, software, coding and cyber security. Additionally, in the same year, more than 600 employees from production, production-related areas and administration further qualified as or were retrained as data and AI specialists.

Learning paths for data workers worldwide

Data is driving the digital transformation of Mercedes-Benz. A data-driven organisation can only achieve its goal if, for example, relevant data can be found, accessed and reused throughout the company in high quality. To ensure this and enable data-based decisions in all specialist units, employees who are responsible for the preparation, analysis and operationalisation of data are required. Mercedes-Benz has therefore defined specific learning paths for data workers for strategically important data and use cases. They supplement the existing training range.

Employees can currently choose between four customised learning paths: Data product owner, data analyst, data engineer and data scientist. This enables employees around the world to build and expand their knowledge of data and AI with recognised certificates or qualify for a completely new job profile.

Conversion training programme for production employees in Germany

To actively promote the digital transformation in production, the in-service qualification programme D.SHIFT was launched in 2021. D.SHIFT is Mercedes-Benz's internal retraining programme for digitally savvy production employees and is used as an instrument of transformation where Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations (MO) is transforming into electrification and digitalisation.

With tailored digital learning content, production employees can qualify for employment opportunities in areas such as data analysis, artificial intelligence or software programming for electromobility. This enables them to expand their skills, contribute their knowledge from the production environment and focus on future-proof employment profiles.

With D.SHIFT, we have achieved a small change with great impact in the transformation. Our digital pioneers have production expertise combined with digital competence. This enables them to work in new digital target areas in innovative ways to develop data-based solutions in production. We have inspired many colleagues, shown courage and proved that transformation can work. As the D.SHIFT team, we are very proud of this and thank all those who support us on this journey.

With intensive individual support, Mercedes-Benz supports participants in the course of the conversion training as well as in the selection process for the previously defined target positions. This makes it easier for each participant to move into the digital future and then enables them to take on a new role in the digital environment.

2021: Pilot project in Berlin Close

D.SHIFT started as part of a pilot project with 11 employees at the Berlin location. In the around-one-year training course, the so-called "digital pioneers" continued on their individual journeys to the career goal of "junior software developer". Following the successful qualification, they began their new jobs at the Digital Factory Campus in Berlin.
