Mercedes-Benz do Brasil grows salad in Mercedes quality.

The German expression “Da haben wir den Salat” is not really about salad – but rather an idiom that means something like “now we’re in a fine mess”. And yes, that’s not an indication of great joy. This expression, however, could be a sign of joy for the colleagues at the Mercedes-Benz do Brasil truck and bus plant in São Bernardo do Campo - specifically when they talk about their “urban farm” where they grow salad, vegetables and herbs for their plant’s canteens.

2,680 kilograms of vegetables – grown according to the guidelines of organic farming - can be monthly harvested at the Urban Farm at the Mercedes-Benz do Brasil truck and bus plant in São Bernardo do Campo.

Since its opening in November 2019 the range has been including baby and rocket salad, spinach, watercress and chicory, as well as parsley, mint, chives, coriander, basil and sage. The colleagues have set up the Urban Farm in cooperation with BeGreen, a Brazilian start-up that has developed a system that requires around 90 percent less water than conventional cultivation. The harvested vegetables are offered in the plant’s canteen which means that Urban Farm also eliminates long transport routes, the "Farm-to-Table" concept saves up to 35.4 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.

The response to the project has been tremendous: The employees at the site love their farm and its products. The "Urban Farmers" of São Bernardo do Campo are therefore already working on the next level: in the near future, tomatoes and eggplants will also be available – 100 percent organic, locally grown, and, of course: in Mercedes quality.

who has been working at Mercedes-Benz for two years now, still is one of the "young vegetables" of Mercedes-Benz communications. His "urban farm" is currently limited to an herb garden on the windowsill, which he tenderly tends and cultivates every day.
