2,680 kilograms of vegetables – grown according to the guidelines of organic farming - can be monthly harvested at the Urban Farm at the Mercedes-Benz do Brasil truck and bus plant in São Bernardo do Campo.
Since its opening in November 2019 the range has been including baby and rocket salad, spinach, watercress and chicory, as well as parsley, mint, chives, coriander, basil and sage. The colleagues have set up the Urban Farm in cooperation with BeGreen, a Brazilian start-up that has developed a system that requires around 90 percent less water than conventional cultivation. The harvested vegetables are offered in the plant’s canteen which means that Urban Farm also eliminates long transport routes, the "Farm-to-Table" concept saves up to 35.4 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
The response to the project has been tremendous: The employees at the site love their farm and its products. The "Urban Farmers" of São Bernardo do Campo are therefore already working on the next level: in the near future, tomatoes and eggplants will also be available – 100 percent organic, locally grown, and, of course: in Mercedes quality.
