Roman Zitzelsberger was born on August 30, 1966 in Ettlingen in the district of Karlsruhe (Germany). He began an apprenticeship as machine fitter at the former Daimler-Benz plant in Gaggenau in 1984. Subsequently, he worked at the plant as measuring technician and machine operator and obtained an advanced technical degree in mechanical engineering.

During his apprenticeship, he was already active as ombudsman and youth representative for IG Metall and subsequently became union secretary in Gaggenau in 1989. In 1996, he was elected as Second Authorized Representative and in December 2003 as Chief Authorized Representative of IG Metall in Gaggenau. In addition to his job, he completed courses at the FernUniversität Hagen in Business Administration and a study program at the Malik-Management-Center in St. Gallen with a Master’s Degree in Management in 2011.

From December 2013 to January 2024, Roman Zitzelsberger was district manager of IG Metall Baden-Württemberg. In the 2015, 2018 and 2022 collective bargaining rounds he negotiated the pilot agreements for the metal and electrical industry nationwide.
